Holiday at Wheatland Farm, Devon, in green accommodation that cares for your stay and the environment. Entirely powered by renewable energy (mostly from our own wind turbine), your holiday will be comfortable, sustainable, relaxing and inspiring.

Stay in one of our three comfortable self catering eco lodges, or try Otter Cottage, by the farm pond (with wood burner). And new for 2012, we're managing Plovers' Barrow cottage, a charming Devon thatched cottage at the end of the farm drive.

Whether you want a base in North Devon, love nature, want to walk with your dog, cycle the glorious Devon countryside, or just relax with a book, our self catering accommodation is for you. Both North Devon and northern Dartmoor are within easy reach of our lodges and cottage, and there are lots of ideas for Devon days out on our growing blog - please add your thoughts!

Welcome to Wheatland Farm in the heart of Devon

Devon Wildlife Trust approved Gold award
Green Tourism Business Scheme Gold award
When the sun came out after rain I got a chance to take a close up of this female orange tip butterfly on lady's smock...
I've found what is probably a dormouse hibernation nest in a sedge at Plovers Barrow, the thatched cottage we're managing at the end of the drive.
Thrilling news - we're finalists in the Visit England 2012 awards Sustainable Tourism Category! The awards will be presented in May in Leicester. Stiff competition and we're delighted just to have got to the top 5. Who knows whether we'll go further!
Spring flowers are dotting Popehouse Moor now, with woodsorrel and carpets of primroses beneath the trees. And best of all, I've spotted a dunnock's nest with young in the garden.
Blackthorn is in full flower - my favourite spring blossom. Tiny, delicate, understated but there first, before the leaves break through on this prickly shrub.
In March you have to look for the details - the trees are still bare but the birds are singing. Willow is putting out catkins though, and of course gorse is in flower.

The cows are back! Three young bullocks from Higher Punchardon have arrived to graze Lower Newland Moor and Popehouse Moor. Don't worry, they're shy and not at all threatening! Here's a clip of them arriving, first time out of the farm yard, and being 'herded' across the lodge field to their new quarters...

Short Breaks Exploring North Devon

Holidaying with children

Walking, cycling, fishing, good food and pubs  - Devon has it all. We're open year-round and offer short breaks all year apart from 6 weeks in the summer school holidays. We are in the heart of Devon yet offer incredibly peaceful surroundings. Many guests just come to relax and chill out. Order some Devon delicacies from our neighbour's farm shop or let the nearby award-winning pub kitchens take the strain! Stride out on Dartmoor, borrow our reclaimed bikes, leave the car behind for a day and go exploring on the bus, let us take you on a guided nature walk or just take your book down to the woodland pond on Popehouse Moor.

Holidays for dogs too...

Why put your dogs in kennels when they'll be welcome here at Wheatland Farm? Ask us about good dog walks - we can lend you maps too. Most Devon pubs welcome well-behaved dogs, and dogs are welcome everywhere on the farm apart from the 7 acre SSSI nature reserve. More information about bringing your pets on our 'dogs welcome' page. Come and meet Muttley!
Children love the space Wheatland Farm offers - 21 acres to explore, managed for wildlife and your enjoyment. Kids can visit the cows in summer, collect eggs from the hens, fish the small pond and play on the swings and slide. Older children particularly enjoy the free-to-borrow bikes and the mown volleyball / badminton court. North Devon's attractions are within easy reach, and after a great day, there's outdoor space for children to be out from under your feet when you're cooking - or why not all decamp to the Kings Arms in Winkleigh for a family friendly pub meal. More about family holidays on our 'children welcome' page.

John and Karen, Nuthatch Lodge, April 2012.
Really enjoyed our stay. Lodge was excellent. We hope to visit again soon.

Sustainable Tourism

Sustainable tourism is at the very heart of our Devon self catering cottage and lodges. So come and find out how easy it is to go green. Check out our enivronment policy, our 'greening' blog where we record how we strive to make the business sustainable, and our facebook page - for the more informal stuff! We also accept volunteers throug the WWOOF scheme (World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms). If you're a WWOOFer and want to stay please see our volunteering page and get in touch. For more about our awards see our Sustainability Awards page.

We're a low impact 'green' business, (with gold approval from both the Green Tourism Business Scheme and the Devon Wildlife Trust) but you don't need to be super-green to stay here - it's for everyone.  Relax in the tranquil haven of 21 acres managed exclusively for Devon's wildlife and your enjoyment. Let us make your self catering holiday or off-season short break easier by ordering local food ahead. And if you come without the car we'll collect you from the station or bus...
