Make your self catering easier by ordering ahead from Fiona's Devon Farm shop - just up the road from Wheatland Farm Eco Lodges and Cottage. Give the cook a holiday too! If your order arrives before you do we'll put it in your accommodation for you.
The farm shop is at Higher Punchardon Farm. It's run by Fiona Marshall and brother Andrew Roberts, with help from three generations of their families. Fiona makes excellent pies and quiches, and bakes lovely cakes and treats. And if you buy meat there you can be really sure it's been well reared with top standard welfare.
The shop also sells seasonal veg (homegrown of course), bread from the Chulmleigh bakery (frozen for freshness as it's not delivered daily) and essentials like milk, tea, local cheeses and chutneys, free range eggs, and some organic standards like flour. They will take a phone order and deliver to your lodge. But you can't pay by card. No worries though - just go in and pay soon after you arrive. Yes, that kind of service does still exist in Devon!
Fiona and Andrew also help us with our conservation work by grazing our turbine field and Popehouse Moor Site of Special Scientific Interest with their traditional breed Devon Red cows - see the video clip. We couldn't manage without them. We need light traditional grazing for just the summer months. We couldn't make that finacially viable without their help. Our grazing agreement was initially brokered by the Devon Wildlife Trust and is now further-supported by the Higher Level Stewardship scheme.
So buying your local food at Fiona's farm shop is another way to make your holiday support sustainable local economies and Devon wildlife, as well as ethical low-chemical farming.
